A little story about the brand:

John Silver is a Swedish tobacco brand that was launched in 1947 by the tobacco monopoly as a cigarette without an American type filter to compete with American brands that have become increasingly popular after the Second World War. It was the first "American Blend cigarette" manufactured by a Swedish tobacco company. The mixture was developed by William C. Bethea who was employed by the tobacco monopoly in 1947.

The cigarette got its name in an internal name competition at the tobacco monopoly after the fictional pirate Long John Silver from the book Skattkammarön. After one year, the brand was closed due to delivery problems by the specified tobacco but it was re -launched in 1952.

In 1958, John Silver became the largest domestic brand in the Swedish market. John Silver with filters came in 1966, and in 1978 the mixture was launched as a roll tobacco.

The tobacco mixture is of Virginia and Burley tobacco. In 1999, the Swedish Match sold the brand to Austrian Austria Tabak. After further acquisitions in the tobacco industry, since 2007, the Japanese equivalent Japan Tobacco Inc and their Swedish subsidiary JTI Sweden that owns the tobacco brand is.
